National Spot Exchange payment-default crisis
In July 2013, NSEL suspended trading after a Department of Consumer Affairs direction requiring settlement of existing contracts and preventing new contracts. The suspension revealed a payment shortfall widely reported at approximately ₹5,600 crore. Investigations and subsequent proceedings examined alleged mis-selling by brokers, purportedly inadequate or false warehouse documentation, hypothecation of stocks and the conduct of defaulters. The matter generated prolonged criminal, regulatory, civil and recovery litigation involving NSEL, 63 Moons and other parties.
