Development-rights and leasing litigation

The dispute ultimately enabled Mills to terminate Golub's residential-development contract and transfer that component to Joseph Freed and Associates.
2006
Mills Corporation financial and accounting difficulties
Mills faced losses on failed projects, liquidity pressure, and a Securities and Exchange Commission accounting investigation that became formal. These problems contributed to uncertainty surrounding Block 37's construction and leasing.

Demolition and landmark-preservation controversy
The clearance of Block 37 generated significant public opposition, particularly because the McCarthy Building was stripped of landmark status before demolition.
