Česká zbrojovka a.s., commonly identified by the CZ brand, is a Czech arms manufacturer headquartered in Uherský Brod, Moravia. Its principal activities cover the design and production of pistols, rifles, submachine guns and other small arms for military, law-enforcement, sporting, hunting and civilian users. The company is part of Colt CZ Group SE, the Czech holding company that also owns Colt and other businesses with related firearms and defense activities. The Uherský Brod plant was established in 1936 as part of Czechoslovakia’s effort to move strategically important industrial capacity away from the country’s exposed western border. It initially undertook demanding military work, including aircraft machine-gun production. After the Second World War, the factory became independent from the nationalized Česká zbrojovka organization in 1950 and developed into the principal Czechoslovak producer of small arms. Its postwar portfolio included the compact Sa vz. 23 and vz. 25 submachine guns, the vz. 58 service rifle and the vz. 61 Škorpion machine pistol. The company’s most internationally influential design is the CZ 75, a 9×19 mm semi-automatic pistol developed from work by designer František Koucký beginning in 1969. Its high-capacity magazine, ergonomic frame and double-action/single-action operating system helped define the so-called Wonder Nine segment of service and civilian pistols. Later CZ products extended the brand into polymer-framed duty pistols, competition handguns, rimfire and centerfire rifles, military assault rifles and selective-fire submachine guns. ČZUB subsequently developed numerous versions and related models, including compact, duty, competition, and decocker-equipped variants. The company also maintained substantial production of rifles for hunting, sport shooting, and military use. Following the end of communist rule and the transition to a market economy, ČZUB operated as a commercial firearms manufacturer competing in international civilian and institutional markets. It developed distribution relationships abroad and strengthened its presence in North America. Its portfolio expanded to include modern polymer-frame pistols, tactical rifles, pistol-caliber systems, rimfire rifles, and competition products. The company’s historic engineering base remained in Uherský Brod, while sales and distribution activities became increasingly international. In 2016, Česká zbrojovka established Česká zbrojovka Partners SE, later known as Česká zbrojovka Group SE, as part of a broader corporate development strategy. The group pursued international expansion and in 2021 completed the acquisition of Colt Holding Company. The transaction connected ČZUB with Colt’s manufacturing, brand heritage, and defense relationships in the United States and Canada. The parent group later became known as Colt CZ Group SE. Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod continues to function as a central manufacturing and product-development company within Colt CZ Group. Its commercial identity remains closely associated with CZ pistols, rifles, and small-arms systems. The company serves a mixture of civilian sporting and defensive markets, military and police procurement, and international distribution channels. As with other firearms manufacturers, products and configurations are subject to national licensing, import, export, and ownership rules.
